well, because there are (thankfully) two cage mounts available on the inside of the front triangle.Ī closer look reveals some thoughtful, versatile, forward thinking design elements including the brake-side chainstay/seatstay brace, tapered headtube, convertible dropouts (for either 142 mm, or 135 mm), internal cable routing for shift cables, ISCG 05 tabs on the bottom bracket shell, 12 mm x 142 mm rear axle, rear caliper post mount, and internal routing for a stealth dropper post. A quick hippity-hop to the local bicycle shop netted two matching green Bontrager bottle cages. Additional green accents are included on the Bontrager (titanium rail) saddle, and three headset spacers. The lime green Race Face Turbine 2×10 crankset offers both good looks (in my humble opinion) and would prove to function quite well too. We had it prepped, set up, and ready to ride in short order and the consensus is that it is indeed a good looking rig. It was hard to tell from the internet pics if the coated raw finish combined with lime green accents was going to look good or gaudy. I had been seeing a fair amount of buzz about this bike, so naturally I was happy to oblige (to put it mildly). JeffJ:Ī while back grannygear let me know he had a Trek Stache 8 on the way, and he thought it might be a good bike for me to put through it’s paces. So now I offer Jeff’s words on how he has taken to the bike, then in the last installment I will add my thoughts and wrap things up. Very minimal gain for a ton of functionality. The weight now for the bike is 28lbs/2oz (including SPDs) where it was 27lbs/12oz with tubes and a standard post. Looks good on there and this bike deserves a dropper post.
You can see how I did it…some velcro straps and a workstand and I did it solo with JefJ calling out the steps one at a time. Note that I mounted the release control on the right side first so I could get to it easier, then we moved it to the left side of the bar. We cut the hose to length and then reattached and bled. I pushed the wire up from below first, inserted the wire into the hose a few inches, then fed it all together back down and out using the wire like a guide. Note the pics below where we used a thin wire to fish the hose down through the seat tube and out the bottom. It took us about 30 minutes to get it all done and I could do it much faster the next time. I have bled Avid brakes (and others) before, so this was not the dark unknown to me. We watched the video on you-tube and then went at it.

The next item was to install a Rockshox Reverb Stealth dropper seatpost on the Stache 8 as it is built with the internal routing for such a thing. Bonty sealant and we inflated them with a floor pump like it was no big deal. It was dead easy to do, but make sure you get the hole in the rim strip dead over the hole in the rim for the valve stem as that strip will NOT move once in place. I suppose I did not take pics as I cannot find any…not sure…but there is not much to see. First we took the wheels tubeless using the stock tires (non-TLR) and a Bontrager kit consisting of rim strips, valves and sealant.
